Boys Town of Washington, D. C. is a tax exempt 501(c) (3) organization incorporated in the District of Columbia and is an affiliate of Boys Town in Nebraska.  Washington is a major metropolitan area where Father Flanagan’s Boys Town is providing hope and healing.  Boys Town of Washington is located at 4801 Sargent Road NE on the 12-acre site of the former St. Gertrude’s School & Development Center in northeast Washington.  Boys Town of Washington has four programs in operation:  Long-Term Residential Care for Boys; Emergency Residential Center for Boys and Girls: Treatment Foster Family Services; and Common Sense Parenting. Religious and moral developments are key components of the program.  Children worship according to the religious tradition they bring to the program.  Boys Town receives no funds from any denomination, nor does it provide money to any religion.

 The Position
 The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and oversees and manages the operations. S/he will manage a functional staff involved in fund development, financial and program Operations activities, and is responsible for meeting all programmatic and budgetary goals and objectives in accordance with the organization’s charter and with the approval of the Board of Directors.
  The Executive Director will be headquartered in Washington, D. C. and will travel to Nebraska several times a year.

Specific Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the Board of Directors, s/he will develop business objectives on an annual basis and longer term strategic plans for all programs.

  • Administer financial planning, allocation and disbursements from the organization’s budget.

  • Coordinate the Washington, D. C. site’s long term financial plan to provide local funding for new or continuing program operations and ensure self- sufficiency.  Maximize returns on investments and increase productivity of programs and staff.

  • Ensure adherence to organization policies and coordinate functions and operations between Boys Town Home Office (dba Father Flanagan’s Boys’ Home ) and Boys Town of Washington, D. C.

  • In conjunction with the Chairman of the Board, sets agendas and facilitates Board Meetings.

  • Supervise and coordinate program and public relation/development activities.

  • Through speeches and formal program presentations, educates and communicates with civic leaders, government officials, and child care professionals to advocate for and achieve important goals for disadvantaged youth and families.

  • In conjunction with the Board and the Development Director, identifies, develops, and maintains effective relationships with necessary support services for programs, (emergency mental health accommodations, physical and mental health care providers, lawyers, law enforcement staff, juvenile court personnel, school officials, bankers, neighbors, religious and youth organization representatives.

Candidate Specification

  • The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous Executive level interface and accountability to a Board of Directors.

  • 5 years+ experience managing total operations for youth programs and residential care, with a successful track record in financial management.

  • Demonstrated leadership with local community fundraising, development, and capital campaigns.

  • Proven experience in networking with local Washington, D. C.area agency and business leaders.  

Highly desired are:

  • Experience in senior level new program development and community-based programs.

  • Four+ years of direct experience with the Boys Town Family Home Program.

  • Senior level experience in similar programs or agencies will also be considered. 

Education Credentials

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.

  • Current CFRE or CFRM certification highly desirable.

This position is responsible for the overall operation, supervision, care, and welfare of the residents and staff of our Youth Emergency Shelter and our Independent Living Program.  Other responsibilities include maintaining statistical data on the Shelter and IL programs; maintaining effective relations and communications with referring agencies, courts and local welfare agencies; maintaining compliance with all state, local and licensing agency standards; and overall responsibility for the budgets of the Shelter and IL program.  Qualified candidates will have a Master’s Degree in a Human Service Field and a minimum of 3+ year’s relevant experience.  Management experience is strongly desired with a minimum of 2+ year’s supervisory experience working with adolescents. Responsibilities include supervision of staff, case management for residents, on-call crisis intervention and support to the live-in Teaching Parent Couples and residential staff; developing and maintaining a consultation service delivery plan for the residential group homes in compliance with specific standards including the Teaching Family Association. B.S. degree in social work, education or related field; Master’s degree preferred.  Position is required to carry a pager 24/7 unless off duty.  Weekend coverage is on a rotating basis.  Housing is provided and this position must live on campus to fulfill job requirements. Management experience and at least 3 years of Residential experience working with at risk youth strongly desired. Good driving record is a must.

Family-Teachers are enrolled in a training program, which includes financial, behavioral, nursing, and many other aspects of client care.  WTFS provides all our couples with twenty-four hour administrative, behavioral, and nursing support.
